Interview: Courtney Abbot
Kimberley caught up with Courtney Abbot who plays Maxine in GIRL VS BOY on TV2 which screens on Sundays at 5pm.
How was the audition for GIRL VS BOY different to any other auditions you have done?
I had so much fun in the audition. It was so relaxed. We did a bit of improvisation, which I am a big fan of. I actually remember leaving the audition and wondering what had just happened. I had had so much fun that it didn’t even really feel like an audition. The process moved really fast, next step was a call back then in no time at all we were filming.
What do you think New Zealanders are going to like about the show?
I think the characters are so relatable and that is what the audience will be drawn to. They are not too large for life, they are normal in a way but everyone will know someone like each of the distinct characters.
What can we expect?
A lot of little twists and some scandals. It is a simple story line so it will appeal to a wide audience. It is so funny but definitely has elements of drama too. I think people will enjoy seeing my character putting her foot in it… often.
Is there a character that you think the audience is going to like the best?
I think all the characters are so great that all of them will be loved for their own reasons.
What was the vibe like on set?
We were all pretty new at what we were doing and I guess I never felt pressure from any of the crew at all. We were all having fun and learning so much. We did a lot of improvisation on set too and I think that really helps you become comfortable with the cast and crew. We were in hysterics all the time.
What is your advise to aspiring young actors?
I would say to make sure you are prepared to work hard, have good work ethic and realize you can’t just jump in at the top. You have to work your way up and work hard. Also just be yourself.
Best advice you have been given?
My mother always told me to be true to yourself. I think if you can do that then you are on the right track.
