Save or Splurge: Hair-Dye

Almost all beauty professionals squirm at the thought of dying their hair at home, but is it really worth all the extra money to get it done at the hairdresser? Find out what our Beauty Editor thinks in this week’s Save or Splurge!
Save – Dying your hair at home
Although a professional colouring job by a hair-dresser is always going to be much safer option, it doesn’t mean that all at-home hair colours turn out disastrous! Colouring your own hair usually has great results if you only go a shade or two different from your natural colour. For example, going brunette to light blonde at home rarely works well, but going from light brown to dark blonde usually works brilliantly.
Being a natural blonde, I usually dye my hair at home if I want to go slightly lighter as it adds extra shine and zest to my hair without making a dramatic change. Another plus is that it is much cheaper than getting a salon job!
Splurge – Hair-Dye at the Salon
Colouring your hair at a salon can cost anywhere between $100-$300, depending on your hairdresser, hair-length and colour. So it’s definitely not cheap, but the results are usually pretty outstanding. Not only do you get to spend an hour having your head massaged and pampered, but you come out of the salon with soft, luscious locks!
By paying a professional you also decrease the risk of your hair turning out a colour that you don’t like. Say goodbye to brassy blondes and stringy-hair – great hairdressers should always leave you feeling happy with the colour and texture.
However, dying your hair does have ongoing costs if you get bad re-growth – so often you have to be prepared to splurge at least once every two months on touching up your roots!
Overall I think it’s important to do your research and be sure about what colour you want to dye your hair before you dye it. At the end of the day the decision is up to you! Do you save or do you splurge???
